A Novato man was arrested after allegedly using his belt buckle to strike a former neighbor and vandalize his car, police said.

The victim called police at about 9 p.m. Tuesday to report the crime, Novato police Sgt. Alan Bates said. The victim said it happened on Los Robles Road near the intersection of Alameda Del Prado, where several men were involved in an argument that escalated to an assault, Bates said.

Bates said the motive for the alleged attack was unclear because of conflicting statements.

Hector Hernandez De La Cruz, 26, was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury and vandalism. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
The incident remained under investigation Wednesday.
